New Jersey's Revolutionary Fire Signals
During the American Revolution, New Jersey played a vital role in helping Patriot forces communicate across long distances. General George Washington directed his officers to establish a system of twenty-threefire signal beacons throughout New Jersey to warn troops of enemy activity. The beacons were designed to be lit in sequence, creating a chain of communication across the landscape.
