Museums in the Movies!
Deborah Farrar Starker, Director | September 13, 2021
I am a huge film buff. I can remember names of obscure actors, recite lines of dialogue verbatim, tell you who did the original and re-make, and I have no problem watching some films that I really like more than once! Based on all this expert research, I have noticed that museums (my other favorite thing) are featured fairly regularly in films. So I thought for this newsletter edition, I would change things up and not write about our museum, but pay homage to some of our bigger brothers and sisters who have made it to the big screen. Here are some of my personal favorites featuring a well known museum.
On the Town, 1949. American Museum of Natural History–Who can forget Gene Kelly dancing through the galleries?
Vertigo, 1958. The Legion of Honor Museum in San Francisco–Kim Novak sits before Portrait of Carlotta, a painting of a 19th woman
Ferris Bueller’s Day off, 1986. The Art Institute of Chicago. Bueller? Bueller?
Some Kind of Wonderful, 1987. LACMA. Keith installed his own art just to impress a girl.
The Thomas Crown Affair, 1999. Metropolitan Museum of Art. The title character famously co-opts Magritte’s Son of Man
The Da Vinci Code, 2006. Musee de Louvre. Talk about Murder at the Museum!!
Black Panther, 2018. The High Museum of Art. Who stole the Wakandan Vibranium?
Maybe someday we will get our close up!
